IDrive alternative for Windows: Tornova Backup vs IDrive
IDrive is a broad backup service for computers, phones, servers and more, sold in large storage tiers. Tornova Backup is a focused Windows file backup with storage-based plans and Organization controls. This page sets out the differences with sources and dates, including where IDrive offers more than Tornova does today.
The short answer
- Choose IDrive if you need one service for Windows, Mac, Linux, phones, NAS or servers, large storage tiers, snapshots, an Entire Machine (system) backup, or physical shipping options for big backups and restores.
- Choose Tornova Backup if your need is Windows file and folder backup with a simple storage-based plan, a restore flow selected on the website and completed on the PC, optional two-step verification, and Teams and restore permissions for a small organization.
- Pricing models differ: IDrive's headline prices are discounted first-year prices that move to a standard price from the second year; Tornova's plans are defined by storage and duration with monthly payment always available.
What IDrive is designed for
IDrive presents itself as cloud backup and storage for home and business, with Personal, Team and Business plans, an IDrive 360 product for IT teams and service providers, NAS and server backup, and cloud-to-cloud backup of services such as Microsoft 365. Its apps cover Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, and one account can back up multiple computers. Source: IDrive's own pages, read on 16 October 2026 (listed below).
On Windows, IDrive offers file and folder backup with a scheduler, Continuous Data Protection options, and an Entire Machine Backup that includes the operating system, with a restore path for different hardware that IDrive says may not always succeed.
What Tornova Backup does today
Tornova Backup protects the files, folders and drives you choose on Windows PCs, stored in the cloud on Microsoft Azure. You can run backups with Back Up Now, schedule them daily, weekly or monthly with Automatic Backup, or use Smart Backup to send only new and changed files at a daily, weekly or monthly check. Restore is selected on the website and completed by Tornova App. See Features.

Overview and control: where Tornova is built to stand out
Tornova Backup is designed so that you can see at a glance whether your files are protected, and so that an organization stays in control of backup and restore. These parts come with the product itself.
The Tornova Windows app opens on an overview: connection, last and next backup, storage used, files protected, devices and recent activity (screenshot with sample data).
On every PC (Personal and Organization). The Home page of the Tornova Windows app answers "am I protected?" at a glance, with Back Up Now one click away. Activity keeps the history of backups and restores with their results.
The Organization overview on the website: members, teams, registered devices, plan and storage, Emergency Stop and Restore Lock status, and the backups that need attention.
For organizations. The Organization overview answers "Are my backups healthy? What needs my attention?" for the whole organization, and the controls behind it are simple:
- Simple administration. On Users & Teams you add a user, choose a role, a team and permissions. Team Admins see and manage only their own team.
- Control over backup. An Organization Admin can turn backup off for a user, and that person's Windows app says so.
- Control over restore, in three gates. The Organization Restore Lock, the Team Restore Lock and each user's own restore permission must all allow a restore. Backup permission and restore permission are separate, and business accounts start with Restore Lock on.
- Restore progress and logs. A restore shows as Ready, Restoring and Completed (or Failed, with the reason) in the Windows app and in Activity.
- Emergency Stop. One Organization-level control stops backup activity across the organization if something serious happens; resuming is a deliberate manual step.
The table compares these areas as each vendor describes them on its own pages (read on 16 October 2026). Where a feature is not mentioned we say so: that means we did not find it in the pages we read, not that it does not exist.

Where IDrive may fit better
- You back up more than Windows PCs: Macs, Linux, phones, NAS devices or servers.
- You need terabytes of storage rather than tens of gigabytes.
- You want a system-level (Entire Machine) backup, snapshots or real-time protection options.
- You want a free starter plan, or physical drive shipping for a large initial backup or restore.
Where Tornova Backup may fit better
- You mostly want to protect documents, photos and work folders on Windows PCs and keep the setup simple.
- You prefer a plan where storage and duration are clear, monthly payment is always available, and a trial never renews by itself.
- You want a web-first restore protected by your sign-in and permissions, with a Keep-both default for name clashes.
- You run a small team and want Teams, restore permissions and a Restore Lock.
Tornova's limits: Windows only today, an early release, self-serve plans up to 100 GB (more by arrangement), data hosted in the United States, no system-image backup, no shipped-drive service, and no client-side encryption.
How to decide
- List the devices and platforms you need to cover.
- Estimate how much data you need to protect now and in a year (see how much storage you need).
- Look at what the price becomes after any first-year discount.
- Try the restore you will actually use, and read the current terms on each site.
- Use the buyer's checklist to compare any two providers.
